Which Whiskey?

If you’re at all familiar with the world of spirits, you know that there are quite a few whiskeys out there to choose from. There really is no right or wrong variety to use in your Whiskey Ginger, it all depends on your taste preferences and personal palate. That being said…

If you’re looking for a smoky flavor, try malt whiskey.

Malt whiskey is typically very high-quality and made only in Scotland. It must only be made from malted barley and distilled in pot stills. Malt whiskey enthusiasts also tend to describe the flavor as “peaty.”

The Whiskey Ginger - The Whiskey Mule RecipeIf you really want to taste the other flavors in your cocktail, try grain whiskey.

Grain whiskey is made in Scotland as well as Ireland, but not from malted barley. Instead, it can be made from any type (or combination of) grain. It is most commonly made from wheat grain and the flavor profile most closely represents vodka.

If you’re looking for soft, subtle and smooth, try blended whiskey.

Blended whiskey is made from a combination of malt and grain, and each brand’s unique flavor will depend on the ratio of the two in the mixture. Most blends tend to have more grain than malt, which gives this type of whiskey its smooth flavor.

If you love hints of spice and caramel, try bourbon or Tennessee whiskey.

Bourbon is whiskey made anywhere in the US, although most comes out of the state of Kentucky. It must be distilled from at least 51% corn, with the rest typically coming from barley, rye or wheat.

The only difference between bourbon and Tennessee whiskey is that the latter is charcoal-filtered before being placed in barrels for fermentation, whereas bourbon is not.
