Mule of the Week
TRATTORIA VITTORIA • SANTA BARBARA, CA
The Italian Mule
Makes 1 cocktail
Ingredients:
- 2 oz vodka
- ½ oz fresh lime juice
- ½ oz Aperol
- 2 oz ginger beer
- Ginger candy and dehydrated orange wheel for garnish
Directions:
Add vodka, fresh lime juice and Aperol to a copper mug. Fill mug to the top with ice and add ginger beer. Stir to combine. Thread three cubes of candied ginger onto a cocktail pick and quickly flame with a culinary torch. While ginger is still smoking, use it to give the cocktail another stir. Balance cocktail pick with grilled ginger on the edge of the copper mug and add the dehydrated orange wheel to the edge for garnish.
An Italian Twist
The Italian Mule served at Trattoria Vittoria in Santa Barbara, California is a unique twist on your average mule. The addition of Aperol gives the drink a hint of appetizing bitterness, while the grilled ginger garnish adds another, slightly smoky dimension that you don’t find in your average cocktail. And let’s not forget the dehydrated orange wedge, which is an ode to the fresh citrus that is abundant in Italy’s coastal cities. If you’re a fan of Europe’s tradition of aperitivos, this one’s for you!
