The Turmeric Mule

The ever-growing category of herbs, spices and supplements known as “superfoods” is taking over menus and recipes worldwide, and finding its way into the cocktail scene as well. Here at MoscowMule.com, we’re all about that healthy balance, so we couldn’t resist coming up with our own superfood cocktail — the Turmeric Mule!

Although there’s still no legal definition of what constitutes a “superfood,” the general consensus is that a superfood contains a wide variety of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, to name a few.

As mule lovers, we’re already a step ahead of the game since our favorite cocktail — the Moscow Mule — contains a hefty dose of ginger beer. Ginger is classified as a superfood because of its nausea-fighting properties, among other things. That alone is enough for us to justify imbibing in a mule or two once five o’clock rolls around, but being experts on the matter, we couldn’t stop there.

We decided to up the nutrient factor even more by creating the perfect Turmeric Mule. It’s still full of all the delicious ingredients you’d find in a traditional mule, but with the additional antioxidant punch and spice of ground turmeric.

Turmeric has been around for centuries, but only recently has it once again become mainstream. “Golden milk” is now an Instagram sensation, and you can find turmeric tea in coffee shops worldwide. It’s no secret why everyone is raving about it.

Here are just a few of the health benefits of the bright orange superfood:

  • FIGHTS INFLAMMATION
  • INCREASES ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF THE BODY
  • TAMES AN UPSET STOMACH
  • REDUCES RISK OF HEART DISEASE
  • IMPROVES BRAIN FUNCTION

Are you convinced yet that you need to add some turmeric to your diet?

You certainly will be after trying out the Turmeric Mule recipe below. As we mentioned, the recipe is quite similar to a traditional Moscow Mule, with just a few small adjustments to really let this superfood shine.

Before adding vodka to your copper mug, you’ll want to mix in the star of the show — the ground turmeric. This ensures that the spice gets evenly incorporated into the drink and doesn’t leave you with any unappetizing chunks.

After mixing the vodka and turmeric, proceed as you would to make a traditional mule, adding ginger beer, lime juice and, of course, plenty of ice.

Depending on the brand of ginger beer you use (and your personal palate) there’s a chance you may feel slightly overwhelmed with the amount of spice the combination of ginger and turmeric presents. If this is the case, feel free to add a bit more lime juice or even a dash of simple syrup to tone it down and sweeten things up a bit. If you’re a spice-lover, this drink is definitely for you!

Turmeric Mule

Makes 1 cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Juice of ½ a lime
  • 3-4 ounces ginger beer
  • Dash of simple syrup (optional)
  • Lime wheels and fresh turmeric root, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Add the vodka and ground turmeric to a copper mug and stir to combine, being sure to break up any chunks. You want the turmeric to be very well incorporated with the vodka.
  2. Fill this same copper mug to the brim with ice, then add lime juice and ginger beer. Stir to combine and give the drink a taste.
  3. If it’s a bit too spicy, add some extra lime juice or a dash of simple syrup (or both!)
  4. Once you have it tasting to your liking, garnish the drink with a lime wheel and chunk of fresh turmeric root.

And remember, to keep your mule cold and fresh, be sure to serve it in a pure copper mug.
